In the Red
Years ago, when Chairman Mao was the boss of Red China, farmers were complaining that certain wild birds were eating many of the seeds they had planted for their annual crops.
The solution from the government came down hard and swift—huge flocks of the birds were summarily massacred. However, after a time, those now protected crops were being consumed by hordes of insects. The mindless government bureaucracy hadn’t taken into account that the seed eating birds were also responsible for keeping the insect population in check. I believe you get the object lesson.
But what does this episode have to do with art, you might ask.
Do not look to a committee to resolve your unique dharma as a creator—an integral voice and shepherd of Mother Earth. Your art is about meritocracy, not a show of hands. If you feel this is somehow abstract or has nothing to do with you as an artist, I encourage you to reevaluate, reconsider, and see things as they are, and not the maya, or illusion of mass social conditioning.
