Many have heard the old saw: those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
There is a related observation: great societies are destroyed from within.
An ongoing mantra in my universe is this: don’t give your power away—this is the road to Big Brother and mindless life by rote.
This is as important for the general citizen as it is for the artist. How can you live a life worth living if you feel entitled? How can you create original work if you conform to the mainstream instead of swimming against it?
If you don’t take the time to find out those things that matter for yourself firsthand, then what can you expect?
As a poet, I’m also very aware of my political responsibility to myself and my fellow travelers.
Although it’s difficult to accomplish, your encouragements for self-discovery are precisely what we (maybe not all, but many) need to flourish in harmony.
