In My Opinion

In My Opinion …

How often have you heard that wordy, unnecessary, and self-deprecating introduction?

We already know it’s your opinion—unless, of course, you have been elected to speak for some group. In that case, it then goes like this: In our opinion—we think this or that based on our collective mind—which is, usually, the kiss of death from the party line, a committee, an art jury, or a communist regime.

When subjecting yourself to the opinions of others, be certain that you know who is talking and more important, where you stand—for that is the most significant understanding you must master in your life as an artist. Yes. There is also tyranny at the heart of approval.

Opinions are like mouths; they are everywhere. Conclusions based on hard-earned personal experience and reflection are not so prevalent.
