Art of Giving

I have a strong feeling about gifts. How are they given?

We all have heard this one: Another tie for my birthday … how thrilling. And the unworn tie eventually ends up in a thrift shop.

If you give someone a present, then you need to put some thought into it. Giving mindlessly, as in an afterthought or out of obligation, is a corruption of the process for both the giver and the recipient. You know when absolutely no effort went into finding out what you like, or could use. Yuck!

One friend said: “It’s no big deal. Isn’t it enough that she thought of you, and isn’t it the thought that counts?”

Yes, of course, and that makes my point.

How do you feel about this issue?»
